TrustoCorp and… Guerilla Grocery Art?

Street art has changed a lot over the years. From simply marking your spot in a public domain to well thought out political statements and full out attacks on the corporate world. TrustoCorp is a New York based artist (or artists) that has taken it to the next level by replacing products in grocery stores with products reflecting their own agenda. The packaging is done so well you may not even notice it if it weren’t pointed out to you. I would love to find one of these while shopping at the grocery store.

Sonorasaurus Rex, Will Anyone Actually Use It?

DJ application Sonorasaurus Rex has been released just in time for the release of the iPad. The interface looks a little basic, but clean and easy to use. The question is will any real DJs actually use these mixing apps with an iPad to perform live shows? I think the relatively inexpensive cost of the device, portability and huge touch screen are welcome advantages over lugging your laptop from club to club and punching in keystrokes on a laptop keyboard. But until these apps have the ability to interface with vinyl I just don’t see anyone using them. Sorato for the iPad?

How do you feel? Would you use an iPad to perform in a club?

Shanghai Five Skate Documentary Teaser

Shanghai Five

The second teaser for the documentary Shanghai Five has been released and is said to be due out late 2010. The film, shot by Charles Lanceplaine, gives a look into the growing skateboarding culture in Shanghai. Looking at the teaser Shanghai Five looks to be filmed really well. I am especially looking forward to seeing it because one of my friends, Brian Smith (shown in the photo), is in the film. He has lived in Shanghai for something like eight years and has been a huge part of the upcoming skate scene in Shanghai. Watch the first teaser.

Introducing TheDopeFiend MP3 Round-Up

Everyday I find new and great music available on other websites. A lot of these MP3s, like on music website RCRDLBL, are not intended to be re-hosted. So, here is a round-up of various downloadable MP3s from other websites I have found recently. This will be an ongoing feature here at TheDopeFiend so watch for future MP3 Round-Ups.

Imagine Blade Shun

Imagine Blade Shun

You probably remember the days when rollerbladers would skate around wearing their baggy jeans doing badly named tricks like alley-oop fishbrains. Well, some of the tricks might still be named weird, but the rollerblading has changed. The sport has matured and has endured beyond being the “cool” thing to do. Imagine Blade Shun is a movie that shows a new generation of rollerbladers adding a creativity to the sport that it has never seen. Just watching the trailer for this movie makes me wish I had never stopped rollerblading.

EIO Clothing Spring Collection

Some years back I posted about the clothing label EIO (Excess is ok). It’s unfortunate they had slipped my mind until the release of their new Spring collection because I really like their stuff a lot. The new collection includes 12 new designs as well as a new t-shirt style ‘The Asylum T-shirt’, which is produced of their own ultra-soft fabric. All tees are hand printed and are produced in limited quantities.

Mixr For The iPad

The other day I posted about an iPad application called Midipad that converts your iPad into a midi controller. Well Mixr has announced their iPad app that transforms your iPad into a piece of full-on mixing hardware. I can’t see any serious DJ using this to perform, but I think it could be a fun way to kill some time or maybe a quite solution for an impromptu portable party party. The interface looks well designed, and the library browser looks like a very elegant way of browsing your tracks. Check out their site for a full list of features.

Mimoco Teams Up With Infectious

If you haven’t heard of Mimobots the short introduction is that they are designer USB flash drives. Mimoco have just teamed up with adhesive art masters Infectious to come up with these iPhone skins that go along with selected USB drives. I am liking this one from the designer series with FriendsWithYou. The adhesives are designed to peel off easily and can also be re-applied many times over.

New Tees From Cool Cats

Cool Cats has released season 4 of their designer tees and are available in their store now. The collection features several designs done by Ed Banger artists So Me and Gaspard Augé from Justice.

Giant Bowery Series

Giant has some nice stuff going on with their Bowery series. With a throwback look and a nod to designs of the past the series may have design elements of the past, but be assured the components are everything you would expect from a modern quality bicycle. I am liking the clean, minimal look of the Bowery FMX. Here are some others from the series I like as well.

iPad Producers: Midipad

The release of the iPad will certainly change the way we view media, but will it also be a useful tool for creating media? The midipad software for the iPad actually converts the device into a virtual midi controller allowing  you to control music software on your Mac or PC. The coolest part about this software is that is allows you to control your software over a wireless connection. This means it’s possible we may see DJs or producers performing live using iPads, and it would give them the flexiblity of not being tied down by a bunch of wires and cables. Hooray For Earth – Surrounded By Your Friends (Twin Shadow Remix)

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Twin Shadow has been making some waves throughout the internets lately. I recently purchased his new album Forget, and I must say I quite like it. I am also really liking this remix he has done for Hooray For Earth, who I had never heard of before this song, but will surely be checking them out after hearing it.

Muscles – Girl Crazy Go (Muscles Inception Remix)

Monday, October 18th, 2010

The last I heard of Muscles he had quit the music business because of problems with his label Modular. This disappointed me because I love his music. However, I was happy to see that if the rumors were true at the time he has apparently changed his mind. A new EP by Muscles titled Younger & Immature is due out October 29.

Here’s a remix of the first single from the EP ‘Girl Crazy Go’. Check out the music video for the original version here. From the sounds of it Muscles hasn’t lost his musical touch, or his ego.

Sleigh Bells – Run the Heart (Bassnectar Remix)

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Music by Bassnectar isn’t something I would normally post here. For the most part I feel his stuff is for dirty rave hippies, and if you read this blog at all you probably know how I feel about the wobbly bass-heavy Dubstep. That being said this remix done of Sleigh Bells‘ song ‘Run the Heart’ is still bass-heavy, but not completely overboard. It also manages to keep a lot of what makes the original track so good.

Martin Solveig ft. Dragonette – Hello

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

Chances are if you spend any amount of time on the internet you have heard ‘Hello’ by Martin Solveig featuring the lovely Dragonette (considering it went number one on Hype Machine). But I couldn’t resist posting this super-fun dance-pop masterpiece. It’s basically impossible not to want to dance to this song. I don’t know a lot about Martin Solveig, but from what I have heard and seen so far I am liking his stuff. Purchase the EP with several remixes on Beatport now.

Millionyoung – Local Joke (Neon Indian Cover)

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Millionyoung, aka Mike Diaz, is shaping up to be one of my favorite artist of 2010. I really love this cover he has done of Neon Indian’s ‘Local Joke’. He adds his own personality to the song, so much that it sounds as though he could have written it. I am looking forward to a full-length album from him.
