S.O.V. VS Zoo York

Since the first time I posted about Lady Sovereign I knew this girl wasn’t going to be just a flavor of the week. Whether you like her or not, she is here to stay. Projects like the new Zoo York/Lady Sovereign skate deck only help support the case. The deck, inspired by S.O.V.’s fashion sense, has an old school feel along with her cute little face displayed right in the middle. Zoo York is only producing 340 of these limited edition decks, so check Ebay for highly priced wood and paint. I would also recommend checking out Zoo York’s second round of Artist Series decks.

Armada Skis Video Podcasts

With being in China, I don’t really miss U.S. television, I never really watched it all that much anyway. But there are times when kicking back and watching some mindless entertainment can do you some good. That’s why I have found myself subscribing to and watching more video podcasts lately. Podcasts like MTV News and VH1 News keep me informed on the pop world stuff, but one podcast in particular has filled another need I am missing out on, the snow sports need. The Armada Ski podcast features interviews with their riders, footage from videos and all kinds of mouth-watering ski goodness. Highly recommended for even those with the option of watching television that’s not in Chinese.

From the creators of Scratch and Hype! comes the graffiti documentary Infamy. Infamy takes a deep look into the lives, mids, families and habits of seven individual graffiti writers from all across the nation. From the law-breaking art they create scaling buildings at night, to art displayed at galleries and museums, Infamy documents it all. “I didn’t want to make another ’scene-movie’ or a general overview of subculture and its history. Instead, we’ve set out to create a more hard-hitting, personal portrayal of the pain and joy of being addicted to the only illegal art form there is.” says Doug Pray, director of the movie. Graffiti/Not Graffiti

At what point does marking property that is not yours become graffiti? When it’s detructive? When you are using paint or a marker? In the case of a British artist that goes by the name of “Moose”, he is not actually marking the surfaces he uses, but creates his art by removing the dirt and dust from the surfaces. Apparently British authorities are having a hard time trying to decide what to do about Moose’s art. He says he got the idea when he saw people’s names written on a dusty tunnel wall, and thought he would step-it-up a level. His only tools required are a shoe brush and water.

With the invent of Flickr came not only an amazing way to share your personal photos, but it also gave hundreds of small communities of people who photo specific types of art and photography a way to unite. Streetr is a website that collects streetart photos from Flickr, and makes it possible for you to browse and vote on the works of art. Think of it as HOT or NOT + Flickr + streetart = a beautifully designed website for graffheadz who like to browse pretty pictures. And for those of us on Macs they even have an OSX widget you can install on your Dashboard.

Urban Counterfeiters

Back in January of this year, along with many other bloggers, I posted about Urban Outfitters blatantly ripping-off a t-shirt design of indie label Johnny Cupcakes. Well, it seems as though someone has decided to do something about situations like this. Urban Counterfeiters is a blog started to help prevent large companies from plagiarizing the work of smaller companies and indie artists. The example shown above is a design stolen by H&M, the orginal was done by Delphi, a small clothing company that is well known by designers. It’s unfortunate that companies like this claim to represent a generation and community that thrives on creativity and originality. If you are aware of other circumstances similar to this, please contact Urban Counterfeiters with your information.

New Toki Doki Goods

If you don’t know by now, I have somewhat of a “thing” for pretty much anything Japan. So it’s no big surprise that one of my favorite artists, Italy’s own Simone Legno AKA Toki Doki, has the same obsession. The latest addition to Toy2R’s Artists Collection series features an 8″ TokiDoki Qee in addition to a bonus 2.5″ Qee modeled after Simone himself. The Qee stays consistant with TokiDoki’s cactus theme that he uses in many of his other designs and figures, as well as his hot nurse everyone loves so much. The release of this awesome little number is scheduled for September or October for $80, and will be limited to 500 pieces. I have got to get my hands on one of these.

VW Beetle Art

I have always found myself attracted to Volkswagens. I am not sure what it is about them, but it seems there is almost a cultish group of artists, designers and creative people who own VWs their entire lives. I think one of the reasons may be the company’s ability to really step outside the box and try something no other car company is willing to do. VW has recently launched their Beetle Art website that allows you to design your own decals to be printed and applied to your new beetle. I think the idea of giving the consumer more power to customize their products is very appealing, especially for a company that already appeals to so many creative people.

TXTual healing

TXTual Healing is a project by Paul Notzold that allows an audience to interact with large speech bubbles projected on buildings and public spaces via text message. The viewer is given a number to send their message to, and then the text is displayed in the projected bubble. Paul has designed the project to explore public vs. private spaces and the dialogue of our private thoughts. What a cool idea, I would love to see a viewing of this.

SKWAK All Over the Place

Something I have struggled with for a long time as an artist is having one distinct style that people can recognize. I am rather schizophrenic when it comes to design, and I admire those artists who have a very easily recognized styles. You could see a Shepard Fairey, Bansky, Neckface or Kozyndan piece from a mile away and recognize the style. Skwak is an artist who I have been seeing all over the place lately and he most definitely falls into this catagory. You may recognize that outlandish style from the load of work he has done for Beautiful Decay. Or more recently some favorite tees of mine he has done for Radioactive and Owl Movement.

I Love Computer Love

Admittedly I spend more time on Myspace than I probably should, but with 86,000,000 registered accounts I don’t think I am alone. I may be a little embarrased about my Myspace addiction, but I have more recently become addicted to a community website that I have no shame in wanting to spend my time on – Computer Love. Computer Love is a online community for creatives to find like-minded people, jobs, news and a lot more about the world’s creative industry. The site also provides a place to upload and share your portfolio and work completely free. The design and layout is executed perfectly and I am sure will only get better, if getting better than perfect is possible.

Zach Slow & Lady SOV

Money may not be able to buy love, but it sure does help at times. Take the case of a dude by the name of Zach Slow for example. Just over a month ago Zach started a website called Help Me Get Random with Lady Sovereign. The site was started to raise enough money to take out the UK hottie emcee Lady Sovereign. The goal was $10,000, and he only had one month before SOV’s performance in his town of San Francisco. I doubted the chances of ten grand being raised, and then once he surprisingly did raise the money I thought the site may be a hoax. That was until today when I recieved and email from Zach today in regards to a quick link I posted on my personal site about his validity. He directed me towards his journal where he has posted photos of the unforgettable night out with Lady SOV proving it really went down. So I dedicate this post to Zach and officially apologize for having doubted you. I hope things work out with you and the Lady, and just so you know I am extremely jealous.

Hooray For Earth – Surrounded By Your Friends (Twin Shadow Remix)

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Twin Shadow has been making some waves throughout the internets lately. I recently purchased his new album Forget, and I must say I quite like it. I am also really liking this remix he has done for Hooray For Earth, who I had never heard of before this song, but will surely be checking them out after hearing it.

Muscles – Girl Crazy Go (Muscles Inception Remix)

Monday, October 18th, 2010

The last I heard of Muscles he had quit the music business because of problems with his label Modular. This disappointed me because I love his music. However, I was happy to see that if the rumors were true at the time he has apparently changed his mind. A new EP by Muscles titled Younger & Immature is due out October 29.

Here’s a remix of the first single from the EP ‘Girl Crazy Go’. Check out the music video for the original version here. From the sounds of it Muscles hasn’t lost his musical touch, or his ego.

Sleigh Bells – Run the Heart (Bassnectar Remix)

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Music by Bassnectar isn’t something I would normally post here. For the most part I feel his stuff is for dirty rave hippies, and if you read this blog at all you probably know how I feel about the wobbly bass-heavy Dubstep. That being said this remix done of Sleigh Bells‘ song ‘Run the Heart’ is still bass-heavy, but not completely overboard. It also manages to keep a lot of what makes the original track so good.

Martin Solveig ft. Dragonette – Hello

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

Chances are if you spend any amount of time on the internet you have heard ‘Hello’ by Martin Solveig featuring the lovely Dragonette (considering it went number one on Hype Machine). But I couldn’t resist posting this super-fun dance-pop masterpiece. It’s basically impossible not to want to dance to this song. I don’t know a lot about Martin Solveig, but from what I have heard and seen so far I am liking his stuff. Purchase the EP with several remixes on Beatport now.

Millionyoung – Local Joke (Neon Indian Cover)

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Millionyoung, aka Mike Diaz, is shaping up to be one of my favorite artist of 2010. I really love this cover he has done of Neon Indian’s ‘Local Joke’. He adds his own personality to the song, so much that it sounds as though he could have written it. I am looking forward to a full-length album from him.
