XLR8R’s Vis-Ed

The other day I walked into some random convenient store in Los Angeles and found the special edition magazine that XLR8R recently published (I love that convenient stores carry ‘zines like this in LA). The magazine is dedicated solely to the section of XLR8R called Vis-Ed, and is cover-to-cover full of featured artists. XLR8R is one of my favorite magazines, if not my favorite magazine out there and I think what they are doing with Vis-Ed is really cool. They have also launched a website dedicated to Vis-Ed which I am hoping is updated frequently.

Hydro74 Updates

I have posted about Hydro74 here before and it’s with good reason, he is an amazing artist. He has recently updated his website with over 55 new works. His illustration and type styles have kind of a neo-gothic style that is easily recognized. His new work includes designs done for Endeavor Snowboards, Nike, Lucas Films, DCMA, Burton, Quiksilver and many others. He also has some great typefaces available for some very reasonable prices.

Sebastian Onufszak

In an age where it’s becoming increasingly easy to get your hands on the tools necessary to become a great digital artist, it’s also becoming increasingly difficult to stand out from the others. Sebastian Onufszak isn’t having much of a problem with the later. HIs work is bright, vivid and intense. With clients ranging from Ray Ban (as shown above), to Ed Hardy, to Nike, to Jeep and more. His portfolio site, In Graphics We Trust, has just been updated and is definitely worth a look.

New 123Klan Website

I have been a big fan of 123klan for a long time now. I really love the way they mesh digital vector with graffiti style art. Their logo and identity work is also some of my favorite stuff out there. It has been a while but they have finally updated their website. They have a new, more simple blog-type site with a bunch of new work including the EP cover and logo for Don Rimini. In celebration of their new website they have teamed up with LOWCLUB to bring you a special hour long mix including some of their favorite tracks.

Danger Skis by Jared Nickerson

In the spirit of the season, have a look at the new Danger Skis with graphics designed by Jared Nickerson. The skis are the pro model for skier TJ Schiller and are available now. I really like Jared’s illustration style and the concepts within them. Jared has an impressive roster of clients including Kidrobot, Suicide Girls, Danger Skis, LaFraise and more. The skis are available for purchase now.

Also make sure to check out the desktops Jared did for suicide girls, pretty hot stuff.

Something in the Universe

It seems the creative people over at Beautiful/Decay are taking their abilities to the next level. Something in the Universe is a creative agency formed by the creators of the magazine. Something in the Universe has already done work such as identity, brand strategy, illustration and marketing for an impressive client list including MTV, Ford, Target, Scion, Stuff Magazine along with plenty more. So far their portfolio has some very impressive work and it seems like an agency any designer would hope to work for.

Akutou Loves You

The amount of talented illustrators, designers and artists out there today is sometimes overwhelming. Everyday I find a new illustrator or designer that has so much talent, but on occasion I find one that really appeals to me. Akutou, or Thomas Pereira, is a French designer that really struck me upon visiting his website. Having done work for clients like RAC, Futurecop!, Threadless, and doing work like this, this and this Pereira is on a fast track to becoming one of my favorite illustrators. He also has a great music blog on his site worth checking out.

The Amazing Work of Fatoe

Fatoe’s work is so awesome it makes me want to puke. Including amazing watercolor/vector artwork, magazine layouts, web graphics and hand-drawn illustration, Mike Orduña has a portfolio that deserves massive amounts of praise. His distinct style has been worthy of such clients like Tank Theory, Sony CONNECT, Linkin Park and DIGIT Magazine. Take a look at his portfolio and be prepared to spend some time, it’s well worth it.

Juxtapoz Feeds the Need

Yes, there is no doubt about it, I am an admitted ‘zine fiend. I simply love flipping the glossy pages of my favorite monthly publications. Yesterday another magazine was added to my favorites list. I picked up an issue of Juxtopoz for the first time. I had noticed on the newsstand before, but surprisingly had never actually read it. Juxtapoz is a magazine featuring the up-and-coming, as well as the already highly-respected artists throughout the world. From Shepard Fairey’s street art in L.A. to Yumiko Kayukawa’s cutesy Japanese pop art, Juxtapoz has it covered.

Fleecircus : Dreaming Big Dreams

Fleecircus is an artist from Singapore and one can see the strong Asian aesthetic in her works. Soft lines, subdued colors, and an almost mute voice that speaks depths. Fleecircus is more than just “taking pictures in city, looking hard to see things that aren’t there”. The website is filled with nostalgic polaroids and breathtaking yet equally playful graphic illustrations that depict images of lovely, fashionable ladies and quirky designed characters.

Wangs & Boobs Never looked So Cute

I first discovered Phallicmammary a couple years ago on her LiveJournal and was completely blown away. This girls skills and creativity are what street art is about. Her strange, yet somehow adorable characters of nipples, breasts and what she calls “Penis Squids” have made their way into streets across the globe. She’s not stopping there either, rumor has it she has recently made a deal with Wheaty Wheat Studios to start producing her own phallic toys. Be on the lookout for this girl, she is on the verge of blowing up bigtime.

Jason Sho Green

I first discovered Jason Sho Green a couple years ago on his LiveJournal, right away I fell in love with his work. Since then he has quickly become one of my favorite illustrators. His art is more than just pretty pictures, the dry and sometimes dark humor involved is what really makes his drawings and paintings stand out to me. Over the past year he has been hard at work and has added a bunch of stuff to his online shop, such as t-shirts. prints, a couple full length magazines and for all Valentines’ lovers some hilarious v-day cards. He also has art shows lined-up all over the country, so watch out for him

Hooray For Earth – Surrounded By Your Friends (Twin Shadow Remix)

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Twin Shadow has been making some waves throughout the internets lately. I recently purchased his new album Forget, and I must say I quite like it. I am also really liking this remix he has done for Hooray For Earth, who I had never heard of before this song, but will surely be checking them out after hearing it.

Muscles – Girl Crazy Go (Muscles Inception Remix)

Monday, October 18th, 2010

The last I heard of Muscles he had quit the music business because of problems with his label Modular. This disappointed me because I love his music. However, I was happy to see that if the rumors were true at the time he has apparently changed his mind. A new EP by Muscles titled Younger & Immature is due out October 29.

Here’s a remix of the first single from the EP ‘Girl Crazy Go’. Check out the music video for the original version here. From the sounds of it Muscles hasn’t lost his musical touch, or his ego.

Sleigh Bells – Run the Heart (Bassnectar Remix)

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Music by Bassnectar isn’t something I would normally post here. For the most part I feel his stuff is for dirty rave hippies, and if you read this blog at all you probably know how I feel about the wobbly bass-heavy Dubstep. That being said this remix done of Sleigh Bells‘ song ‘Run the Heart’ is still bass-heavy, but not completely overboard. It also manages to keep a lot of what makes the original track so good.

Martin Solveig ft. Dragonette – Hello

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

Chances are if you spend any amount of time on the internet you have heard ‘Hello’ by Martin Solveig featuring the lovely Dragonette (considering it went number one on Hype Machine). But I couldn’t resist posting this super-fun dance-pop masterpiece. It’s basically impossible not to want to dance to this song. I don’t know a lot about Martin Solveig, but from what I have heard and seen so far I am liking his stuff. Purchase the EP with several remixes on Beatport now.

Millionyoung – Local Joke (Neon Indian Cover)

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Millionyoung, aka Mike Diaz, is shaping up to be one of my favorite artist of 2010. I really love this cover he has done of Neon Indian’s ‘Local Joke’. He adds his own personality to the song, so much that it sounds as though he could have written it. I am looking forward to a full-length album from him.
