These city in a bag toys by MUJI are perfect for well travelled children and globe trotting individuals as well. Three popular cities (Tokyo, Paris, and New York) are immortalized in wood with emphasis on their most famous landmarks. These toys are great ways to introduce kids and kids-at-heart to the most stylish cities in the world and at the same time, double as playful, yet sophisticated home decor.
2006 is a big year for Japanese clothing brand Uniqlo and their t-shirt collection. With styles and designs created by big design names such as Colette, Staple Design, and Lodown, everyone should be on the look out. As a personal fan of Uniqlo, I can tell you that their t-shirts are of the best quality and their prices are more than affordable. (I even bought two of their Futura tees in black and white back in 2004.) At only 1,500 yen each, these amazing tees are a steal.
Brazilian music seems to be having an influence on artists all over the world, and Japan is no acceptation. Like nothing I have heard from a Japanese artist Tigarah is largely influenced by Baile Funk, UK Grime, Baltimore Club and Hip-hop. Her most notable track “Girl Fight” has really caught my attention. After majoring in political science at Tokyo’s renowned Keio University the spunky artist began writing music expressing her politcal views. After spending much time in Brazil and being inspired by the culture Tigarah released an 8 track EP, and is expected to release a full length LP this summer. Keep your eye out for this one, this Japanese cutie is breaking boundries.
Busy Work Shop just opened its doors to Hong Kong residents last Saturday, April 1. That’s a pretty cool way to celebrate April Fool’s isn’t it? Of course, the brains behind the Japanese fashion empire, Nigo, was there to join in on the festivities. And as expected, he was wearing his ubiquitous neck gear. I wonder how much those necklaces weigh…
24-year old Shunsuke Iwata is responsible for the beautiful photographs found in his website. The photos are in themes, ranging from beautiful scenery to delicate portraits. The photos also have a very clean, immaculate feel to them due to the brightness and use of natural sunlight. Style, solitude, and an understated happiness radiate from the photographs and these will make you want to go back to the website over and over again.

Chillwave, dreampop, psych R’n'B… whatever you call the sound this has been the Summer of fuzzy synths, tropical sounding beach music that warms the soul. And I love it. Visions of Trees is some of my favorite I have heard of this genre. Especially this track ‘Sometimes It Kills’. The beautiful female vocals and fuzzy, dreamy beats are nothing short of heavenly. I can’t wait to hear more from this English duo. Also head over to Vice to hear a mixtape Visions of Trees have put together for them.

I have really been enjoying the music of Baths lately. Here is a remix done of ‘Post Atmosphere’ by Shlohmo that has some really nice glitchy beats. I am always down for some well-done glitches, blips, bleeps or other electronic sounds.

Salem is one of those music acts that you don’t quite know how to feel about, and don’t even begin to know how to categorize. Dreamy electronic beats with female vocals and sometimes distorted rapping. At times dark and scary, at times beautiful, but quite always strange. Check out their video for the track ‘Dirt’ and you will know what I mean.

Earlier this month my good friend in Shanghai, R3, shared this five minute journey of a track with me. It’s difficult to even begin to categorize this unique song. Sort of an upbeat darkwave sound. I really love the breakdown around two minutes in. R3 is one of the most talented producers I know and he continues to improve his skills. I look forward to a full length album from him. Hint hint.

With each remix released by Computer Blue I increasingly become more impressed. On this remix of The Rapture’s song ‘Echoes’ they take a fairly standard dance rock hit and manage to keep all the great things about the song, and add an electro twist that only makes it better. The wailing vocals are perfect for a dance floor banger, and the intro just kicks complete ass.
