XLR8R Adds Miami to Their Guide
XLR8R's City Guide now has Miami.

I am a huge fan of magazines. Nothing can replace the smell of fresh ink on the pages of your favorite magazine, but the next best thing would be a super-sleek way of browsing thousands of magazines at the click of a mouse or tap of an iPad. Issuu is a web publishing site that offers a huge selection of all kinds of magazines. If you are a publisher it’s a totally free and very streamlined way of reaching a worldwide audience.
I am by no means a “car guy”, which is why I was surprised when I found myself purchasing the magazine Intersection the other day. Intersection magazine seems like a hybrid of a fashion, automobiles, art, design and urban lifestyle. With very well done art direction they seem to tie everything together perfectly. It’s kind of the Dwell for the auto world.
I am a complete sucker for magazines. In fact TheDopeFiend originally began as Mesh Magazine, a printed magazine I was publishing. If you also love the high you get from the smell of a freshly printed ‘zine check out Mag.nificent, a blog that features “Magazine culture, obsessively & compulsively documented”. This blog covers a huge variety of different magazines and is sure to open you up to more mags to feed your addiction.
XLR8R has given their website a facelift! For years now I have been a huge fan of this magazine. Being out of the country for the past year, and not having access to the print ‘zine, I have also become very impressed with their online presence. It is simply the best all-around resource for music and culture media that I know of. One could spend hours browsing the content on XLR8R’s website. With three frequently updated podcasts, free MP3s updated weekly, daily music videos, event listings, photo blog, album reviews and a huge archive of all of the above I would say that XLR8R’s website had better be on your list daily visits.
For those of you who have been busted multiple times stealing your girlfriend’s old issues of Nylon Magazine, there is an alternative that will keep you on good terms with the old lady, and keep you up to date on fashion, music and culture. Nylon Guys is just that, Nylon Magazine, but for guys. It still has all the goods that the original Nylon has, only now there is more content for the guys. Check out features about the latest designer denim, sneakers, t-shirts, your favorite musicians and more.
Yes, there is no doubt about it, I am an admitted ‘zine fiend. I simply love flipping the glossy pages of my favorite monthly publications. Yesterday another magazine was added to my favorites list. I picked up an issue of Juxtopoz for the first time. I had noticed on the newsstand before, but surprisingly had never actually read it. Juxtapoz is a magazine featuring the up-and-coming, as well as the already highly-respected artists throughout the world. From Shepard Fairey’s street art in L.A. to Yumiko Kayukawa’s cutesy Japanese pop art, Juxtapoz has it covered.
One thing I always have to buy when visiting another country are magazines. Even if the text is written in a language I can’t read or understand, I buy it. I figured that these are way better than tacky souvenirs and at the same time, keeps me updated on the current trends and issues in that specific country.
A friend recently came back from Australia and brought with her a copy of Frankie which impressed me to no end! The layout and photographs are superb, articles are humorous and well written (personal favorite would be the one on swearing), and the current fashion/music/art trends happening down under are presented very well. Frankie deserves to be recognized internationally (or maybe it already is) along with edgy magazines such as NYLON, Tokion, Paper, Soma, etc.
Honeyee is an online magazine from Japan that updates me with news about art and fashion through the eyes of Japan’s cool hunters. For people who love high end street-fashion such as Number (N)ine and Neighborhood, you’re in luck (Although you’d have to know how to read Japanese) because these are a few of the favorites.
Honeyee also has personal blogs of people in the know such as FPM’s Tomoyuki Tanaka, Hiroshi Fujiwara, VISVIM’s Hiroki Nakamura, Undercover’s Jun Takahashi, and Hong Kong superstar Edison Chen. Head on over to Honeyee and enjoy the high style Tokyo’s coolest denizens has to offer.
Bold & Beautiful is the project of Ezra Petronio, editor-in-chief of Paris’ ultra-hip magazine, Self Service. The book features polaroids of some of the most influential people in fashion and the film industry. Perhaps this book will enable all the fashionistas and budding stylephiles out there to put a face to the name of their favorite designers such as Agnes B., Kim Jones, and Jean Touitou of A.P.C. If you’re someone who is into fashion, photography, and art, what are you waiting for? Go grab the book now.

The new Interview Magazine is a must have. Featuring interviews with Bape’s main main Nigo, US co-ed/Japanese pop star Utada (who I am 100% head over heals for), Puffy Ami Yumi, Kill Bill’s super-hot school girl Chiaki Kuriyama, artist/genius Takashi Murakami and more. I am going to buy it today!
There are crazy thoughts running through my head wanting to enter the King of ‘Zine contest sponsored by Tokion, but then I remember I already tried the printed mag thing, and ended up in debt. So all of those out there willing to give it a shot, Tokion is promising big prizes for the best photocopied magazine, give it a shot!
There is a new local magazine published out of Kaysville called “Elevation 9350” that looks really cool. The magazine is mainly a Skate, Snowboard and Wakeboard magazine, but also includes some other random stuff. With SLC being one of the largest snowboarding hubs in the nation I am surprised something like this hasn’t come out sooner. The magazine is similar to SLUG as far as print quality goes, but it’s layout and photographs are better. Their first issue recently came out, I found it at Gandolfo’s downtown but I am sure they have stocked up all the local skate and snowboard shops around so check it out.

Twin Shadow has been making some waves throughout the internets lately. I recently purchased his new album Forget, and I must say I quite like it. I am also really liking this remix he has done for Hooray For Earth, who I had never heard of before this song, but will surely be checking them out after hearing it.

The last I heard of Muscles he had quit the music business because of problems with his label Modular. This disappointed me because I love his music. However, I was happy to see that if the rumors were true at the time he has apparently changed his mind. A new EP by Muscles titled Younger & Immature is due out October 29.
Here’s a remix of the first single from the EP ‘Girl Crazy Go’. Check out the music video for the original version here. From the sounds of it Muscles hasn’t lost his musical touch, or his ego.

Music by Bassnectar isn’t something I would normally post here. For the most part I feel his stuff is for dirty rave hippies, and if you read this blog at all you probably know how I feel about the wobbly bass-heavy Dubstep. That being said this remix done of Sleigh Bells‘ song ‘Run the Heart’ is still bass-heavy, but not completely overboard. It also manages to keep a lot of what makes the original track so good.

Chances are if you spend any amount of time on the internet you have heard ‘Hello’ by Martin Solveig featuring the lovely Dragonette (considering it went number one on Hype Machine). But I couldn’t resist posting this super-fun dance-pop masterpiece. It’s basically impossible not to want to dance to this song. I don’t know a lot about Martin Solveig, but from what I have heard and seen so far I am liking his stuff. Purchase the EP with several remixes on Beatport now.

Millionyoung, aka Mike Diaz, is shaping up to be one of my favorite artist of 2010. I really love this cover he has done of Neon Indian’s ‘Local Joke’. He adds his own personality to the song, so much that it sounds as though he could have written it. I am looking forward to a full-length album from him.
