STEREO @ Sound

This coming Wednesday (June 18th) The Sugar Rush Kids and TheDopeFiend bring you the kickoff party to our new weekly club night STEREO. STEREO is a night dedicated to bringing a whole new breed of internationally recognized DJs and bands to Salt Lake City, as well as giving local DJs the opportunity to play and gain exposure. Unlike most other weekly club nights in Salt Lake City, STEREO will feature new DJs every week, many of which have never performed in Utah. Plans are already in the works to bring out MSTRKRFT, Eli Smith and other So Sweet artists, Steve Aoki of the DIM MAK fame, and many others.

For the kickoff party Dan-oh , weekly resident at Hollywood’s DIM MAK Tuesdays, will be laying down a set that’s sure to be unforgettable. Also performing will be Salt Lake’s own Never Eat Neon and DJ Nova from Los Angeles.

Super Heavy!

For local readers in Salt Lake City who are feeling the lack of variety in the club department, check out Super Heavy every Wednesday at The Mynt. This is a new weekly started by myself and musical partner in crime HOT NOISE!!! to bring something
new to the party people here in SLC. I won’t begin to try and list of the lengthy list of music genres that we play every week. I will tell you you won’t hear this shit anywhere else in this city, and if you like to dance there’s no better music. Besides, why explain the music when you can just listen to it?

Why? : Kayo Gallery : SLC, UT

The First time Why? performed in Salt Lake City I was unable to go, so I couldn’t let another opportunity to see the Post-Folk genius pass me by. Last night Why? played for a small crowd of about 50 people at Salt Lake City’s Kayo Gallery. This was the first stop on the tour, and despite the small crowd the energy of Why? and his band was surprisingly high. It’s always nice to hear an artist that sounds as good live as they do an their album. Look for a tour stop near you and don’t miss out on a great perfomance.

Check out more photos from the show.

The Album Leaf Tonight

The Album Leaf is playing tonight at Liquid Joe’s. We went to this show last time they were in town at Liquid Joe’s and it was amazing. The last show was very visual based and was super mellow. It might be a good idea to get there early and get a seat. Opening for them will Roots of Orchis and Black Mountain. This should be a great show.

The Unkown Art Gallery

Recently a local artist by the name of Kleptoh told me about The Unknown Gallery, also known as UNK. I checked it out and it looks like it has got some cool stuff going on. The 1,400 square foot space, located in the Artspace Rubber Company building on second south, has got a distinctive urban feel unlike most art galleries in SLC. The Unknown Gallery is currently showing SEED featuring recent works by: David Ruhlman, Cein Watson, Lincoln Lysager Aleksandr Taymer, and Travis Dinsmore. It looks like they have some interesting shows on the horizon so keep your eye out.

New “Local” Store

A new store called “Local” has opened up in the South Towne Mall in Sandy that is dedicated to supporting the local music and clothing designers. This seems like a great idea, and it’s always nice to see people trying to support the local scene, but I do wonder why owner Eric Rooks has chosen this location. It would seem to me perhaps Sugarhouse, or a more central location might be more fitting. Regardless I wish the best and give mad respect to anyone who puts themselves out on a limb to try and support something they love. It is said the store will be having live performances from local musicians, so stop by and check it out.

New Local Magazine

There is a new local magazine published out of Kaysville called “Elevation 9350” that looks really cool. The magazine is mainly a Skate, Snowboard and Wakeboard magazine, but also includes some other random stuff. With SLC being one of the largest snowboarding hubs in the nation I am surprised something like this hasn’t come out sooner. The magazine is similar to SLUG as far as print quality goes, but it’s layout and photographs are better. Their first issue recently came out, I found it at Gandolfo’s downtown but I am sure they have stocked up all the local skate and snowboard shops around so check it out.

Hooray For Earth – Surrounded By Your Friends (Twin Shadow Remix)

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Twin_Shadow

Twin Shadow has been making some waves throughout the internets lately. I recently purchased his new album Forget, and I must say I quite like it. I am also really liking this remix he has done for Hooray For Earth, who I had never heard of before this song, but will surely be checking them out after hearing it.

Muscles – Girl Crazy Go (Muscles Inception Remix)

Monday, October 18th, 2010

musclesyim

The last I heard of Muscles he had quit the music business because of problems with his label Modular. This disappointed me because I love his music. However, I was happy to see that if the rumors were true at the time he has apparently changed his mind. A new EP by Muscles titled Younger & Immature is due out October 29.

Here’s a remix of the first single from the EP ‘Girl Crazy Go’. Check out the music video for the original version here. From the sounds of it Muscles hasn’t lost his musical touch, or his ego.

Sleigh Bells – Run the Heart (Bassnectar Remix)

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Sleigh+Bells+sleighbells1

Music by Bassnectar isn’t something I would normally post here. For the most part I feel his stuff is for dirty rave hippies, and if you read this blog at all you probably know how I feel about the wobbly bass-heavy Dubstep. That being said this remix done of Sleigh Bells‘ song ‘Run the Heart’ is still bass-heavy, but not completely overboard. It also manages to keep a lot of what makes the original track so good.

Martin Solveig ft. Dragonette – Hello

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

dragonette-martin

Chances are if you spend any amount of time on the internet you have heard ‘Hello’ by Martin Solveig featuring the lovely Dragonette (considering it went number one on Hype Machine). But I couldn’t resist posting this super-fun dance-pop masterpiece. It’s basically impossible not to want to dance to this song. I don’t know a lot about Martin Solveig, but from what I have heard and seen so far I am liking his stuff. Purchase the EP with several remixes on Beatport now.

Millionyoung – Local Joke (Neon Indian Cover)

Friday, October 1st, 2010

million-young

Millionyoung, aka Mike Diaz, is shaping up to be one of my favorite artist of 2010. I really love this cover he has done of Neon Indian’s ‘Local Joke’. He adds his own personality to the song, so much that it sounds as though he could have written it. I am looking forward to a full-length album from him.
